    On Cloudsurfer Review

    On Cloudsurfer

On, is a relatively new running shoe brand in Australia, having said that, they have here for several years and have been on my radar for most of that time.  On, is a Swiss-engineered running shoe brand, launched in 2010 and has gained a very strong following throughout Europe and has now been worn by over 70 million runners across 50 countries.

I have recently had the opportunity to wear-test the On Cloudsurfer. I have been intrigued by On for quite a while now, and to be honest I was a little unsure as to how the shoe would stack up.  The first thing that you will notice is that On shoes are different from anything else on the market at the moment, they are a great combination of Swiss engineering and eye-catching design. The Cloudsurfer is described by On as a shoe with the comfort of a training shoe and the speed of a racing flat.  On, classify the Cloudsurfer as a performance shoe, ideally for your Tempo sessions or as a race shoe for distances 10km to marathon.

    First Impressions

To look at, On shoes are very distinctive. The Cloudtec outsole, as well as the design and colourways of the upper, set them apart from all other brands. Once the shoe was on the first thing which I noticed was a rocker from heel to toe, as well as the softness of the cushioning under the heel. The engineered mesh upper also allows freedom of movement, as well as firmness where you need it to provide a comfortable fit.

    Road Test

I have tested the On Cloudsurfer on a variety of training runs, tempo, intervals, and recovery. It did not take very long at all to notice the smoothness of the ride. The unique outsole and midsole provide a nice cushioned impact on foot strike and the heel to toe rocker provide a very smooth transition from foot strike to toe-off. Having a fairly broad mid-foot, I found the upper a little firm on my first couple of runs, however, the engineered mesh upper quickly adapted to my foot shape. In terms of weight, the On Cloudsurfer is lighter than most other comparable shoes from other brand offerings.

    Tech

    On CLoudsurfer sole

Let’s start from the ground up. The Cloudtec system is designed to give soft landings and powerful explosive takeoffs, as the pods compress with loading and spring back with de-loading. The midsole has two layers of EVA which provide excellent cushioning. Also On, have included an engineered Speedboard within the midsole. The Speedboard is a thin piece of thermo-plastic that runs the full length of the shoe and provides the rocker shape. The Speedboard offers a tremendously smooth transition throughout ground contact and also encourages greater propulsion through toe-off.

The upper of the Cloudsurfer compromises of engineered mesh for a nice firm fit, seamless internal linings to avoid any skin irritations as well as an external thermoplastic heel counter/ clip. The fit is true to size both width and length.

    Conclusion

The On Cloudsurfer is certainly a shoe to have in your kit. It offers a super smooth ride, and makes you want get up on your toes and go!
